Luongo, who finished 634th in last year’s Main Event for a $19,227 payday, busted from the 2013 Main Event during the second level of play on Day 2c.
The Montreal-born hockey player became short stacked early in the day and was eliminated after shoving with straight and flush draws on the turn of a T♠ J♥ 8♦ K♠ board with 9♠ 8♠.
Luongo’s opponent called with king-ten for two pair. Luongo's massive draw missed completely when the board whiffed with the 2♥ on the river.
“I was really disappointed,” said Luongo after busting.
“I had high hopes for this year. I was running into hands from the start of the day. You can play really well sometimes and it’s just not meant to me. Unfortunately I feel like today was one of those days.”
Roberto Outlasts His Brother Fabio this Year
It was a tough day all around for the Luongo family as Roberto’s brother Fabio busted from the tournament earlier in the day.
Luongo was representing PlayNow.com, the only government-run online poker site in North America. He said he would return to the WSOP at some point in the future.
There are still thousands of players in the 2013 WSOP Main Event and the money, which is set to begin when 648 players remain, is expected to be reached later this week.
