Deeb, Selbst Rise to Top on 2012 Main Event Day 2a/b

Deeb picked up 460,900 chips while Selbst snagged 350,400 but they’re both looking up to Winamax pro Gaelle Baumann who accumulated 505,800.

Today’s festivities were structured in a way that we’ve never seen at the WSOP Main Event as both Day 2a and Day 2b played out under the same roof.

These days the WSOP has a tremendous amount of capacity at the Rio so organizers simply decided to put Day 2a in the Amazon Room while Day 2b took place in the Brasilia and Pavilion Rooms.

In total 2,044 players threw themselves into the fray today and by the time the dust cleared about 900 players remained.

Negreanu in Form

Daniel Negreanu was in fine form today and added another day to what has been a pretty outstanding Main Event so far.

The Canadian has had a so-so WSOP with over $60k in cashes but also bought into a ton of tournaments including the $1 million buy-in BIG ONE.

Negreanu could completely redeem himself with a deep run in the Main Event with $8.5 million on the line for first place. He finished with 277,200 chips.

The top 10 in chips after Day 2A/B:

1. Gaelle Baumann 505,800 2. Mark Demirdjian 499,900 3. Shaun Deeb 460,900 4. Kevin Davis 394,800 5. Jan Kasten 391,800 6. Taylor Paur 391,600 7. Matt Woodward 381,000 8. Jacob Schindler 371,600 9. Julio de la Rosa 350,700 10. Vanessa Selbst 350,400

NHL Goalie Roberto Luongo Makes Day 3

Apparently Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo can do more than just stop pucks. The Montreal-native is having a very strong showing in his first WSOP Main Event.

The PlayNow.com sponsored player went on a huge rush near the end of his Day 2 to stack his way up to 142,400 chips.

If Luongo manages to survive through one more day he stands a very good chance of making the money, which starts at $19,277 with 666 players remaining.

Check out our video interview with Luongo on Day 1 here.

Christina Lindley ended the night in the best possible fashion when she tripled up with pocket queens against another pocket kings and ace-king. Lindley binked a queen on the turn to end the day with 65,000.

Justin Bonomo, Darvin Moon, Bryan Devonshire, David Williams, Erik Seidel, Mike Matusow, Scott Seiver and Tony Dunst weren’t as lucky as they all hit the rail.

Main Event Dream Still Alive

There are ton of huge names still in the hunt for that elusive Main Event bracelet including:

Jason Somerville (332,700) Eugene Katchalov (330,900) Gavin Smith (279,100) Daniel Negreanu (277,200) Mike "Timex" McDonald (225,000) Brock Parker (218,000) Maria Ho (198,500) Eric Baldwin (182,600) Brian Hastings (167,000) Shawn Buchanan (164,100) Sammy Farha (149,600) Faraz Jaka (139,500) Leo Margets (120,400) Liv Boeree (104,300)

2011 Main Event champ Pius Heinz and past winners Peter Eastgate, Jerry Yang, Dan Harrington and Robert Varkonyi also all survived the day to get a crack at their second ME bracelet.

Players who bagged up chips today will return to action on Thursday for Day 3 of the Main Event.

Meanwhile Day 2c of the 2012 Main Event with Jake Cody, Chris Moorman, Josh Arieh, Viktor Blom and over a thousand other players return to try and survive their own Day 2 tomorrow.
