The European leg of the world’s biggest poker tournament series will play out over two weeks at the Hôtel Majestic Barrière in Cannes, starting September 21.
Due to French gaming law only Hold’em and Omaha tournaments are allowed, which means this year’s slate of events will look a lot like the WSOPE’s first visit to Cannes one year ago.
A €10,000 main event headlines a list that includes a Shootout, full-ring and six-max PLO events and the same Mixed Max event we saw in 2011.
Kicking things off is a €2,500 Six-Max No-Limit Hold’em event that’s scheduled for three days.
One big difference for 2012 is that the entire series has been moved up more than two weeks.
“We can’t wait to return to the Cote D’Azur in 2012,” said WSOP vice president Ty Stewart. “We have moved up the schedule a couple of weeks to take better advantage of the great weather and all Cannes has to offer.
“Ask anyone who attended last year. This tournament is now a certified major championship and the experience is second to none,” he said.
Expectations High for 2012 Attendance
Last year the WSOPE main event crushed the previous attendance record of 362 that was set in 2007 and tied in 2008.
In total 592 players entered in 2011, and the WSOP is expecting even more for 2012.
“The media is already speculating on 1,000 players for the Main Event and we will be ready for them,” said Stewart.
American Elio Fox won the 2011 main event and collected €1.4 million.
