Everything changed for Dimmig at the 2014 WSOP in Las Vegas when he navigated the monster 7,977-player field of the Millionaire Maker and ultimately won the bracelet and $1.3 million to go with it.
Prior to his Millionaire Maker victory, Dimmig had barely left his backyard to play poker.
Now he finds himself an ocean away in Melbourne, Australia for the 2014 WSOP APAC.
Travelling Outside North America for the First Time
“This is the farthest I have gone - outside of Canada, which isn’t too far from Buffalo. But I do live in Vegas now,” Dimmig told us during Day 1b of the $1,100 No Limit Hold’em Accumulator. “I just thought this would be a great time to come down to Australia, check out the sights and play a little poker.
“Travelling is the thing I was looking forward to most. You know, being able to play abroad and see how the game is different in all the different areas of the world.
"I’ve always wanted to travel and winning that tournament has given me the chance to fulfil some of those dreams.”
So far Dimmig appears to be having a blast in Australia bantering with the locals while attempting to build a significant stack.
Dimmig’s dreams aren’t exclusive to travel and the poker table, however. Dimmig has been working on a novel that was inspired by a dream he had one night.
“It was funny, I had never really written anything before, but I had a dream and I just had to write about it,” Dimmig quips.
“I figure if you have a dream that strong, you got to write it all down, you know? It’s been a great challenge.”
Dimmig didn't disclose the subject of his book and it might take some time for the novel to surface if he keeps his attention fixed on the poker table.
The Challenge of Playing Poker and Writing a Novel
It’s certainly unlikely that Dimmig will have time to work on his novel while he is here in Australia.
“It’s just been such a great challenge. It has been put on the backburner a bit because of poker, but I’m still having fun writing it and hope to finish it soon,” Dimmig says.
So, what's easier playing high-stakes poker or writing a novel?
“Grinding at the poker table is definitely preferable to grinding novel writing but that’s why I love writing the novel too,” Dimmig declares.
Not only will Dimmig spend plenty of time doing the tourist thing, he will also be extremely busy searching for his second bracelet at WSOP APAC.
“I plan on playing most of the No Limit Hold’em events,” Dimmig proclaims. “I might play the smaller buy-in PLO, but we will see. I thought about the High Roller but I would rather be going deep in the Main Event and not have it be an option to play the High Roller. We'll see.”
