WSOP APAC 3-Bet: Hellmuth Dazed, Glazier Deals, 197 Runners

In today’s inaugural daily APAC 3-Bet we find Phil Hellmuth making his glorious entrance to the series, Jackie Glazier’s shuffle up and deal and some early numbers.

1) Hellmuth In Late, Busts Early

It’s just not a WSOP without the Poker Brat.

Phil Hellmuth arrived in typical Phil Hellmuth style today by arriving in Melbourne at 11:30 a.m. then sleeping 11 hours and finally late-regging into Event #1.

It was an uphill climb for the 13-time bracelet winner, however, as he only had about 15 big blinds to work with.

Hellmuth didn’t last long as he got his A-8 all-in against Gary Benson’s pocket fours. The sleepy looking Hellmuth shuffled off into the night while asking what time play started tomorrow.

We’re still waiting for Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu to show up and make this a real party. Negreanu said on Twitter that he was going to play today but never showed up.

Meanwhile it’s anybody’s guess as to when Ivey will show up. Maybe he's taking a helicopter.

2) Crowd Goes Wild for Jackie Glazier

To say it was fitting Jackie Glazier performed the ceremonial shuffle up and deal would be an understatement.

The Melbourne local is one of the most popular Australians to play the game and won a bracelet at the Ladies event in the WSOPE last fall.

Ever the friendly host, Glazier gave foreign players some restaurant tips before instructing the dealers to put the cards in the air.

Unfortunately Glazier didn’t make it through the day as she had pocket kings cracked by 99 in a massive pot.

We caught up with Glazier during a break and talked about Australian poker and the significance of doing the shuffle up and deal.

3) Day 1a Draws 197 Players

The first tournament of the 2014 WSOP APAC got off to a decent start with 197 players taking to the felt for Day 1a of Event 1, $1,100 Accumulator.

It wasn’t bad but it did fall short of the 300+ that came out for Day 1a of the same tournament in the 2013 WSOP APAC.

It’s tough to say what this new fall APAC will do for numbers in a new WSOPE-less world. As with all poker tournaments, however, we expect the numbers to increase considerably as the week goes on.
