WPT World Championship Gets Huge Boost, Koon Leads

Through two starting days the field hit 328 runners, which is a massive increase over the 146 players at Bellagio in 2013.

Although prize pool details haven’t been released yet, it appears that despite the boost in attendance the tournament still came a little short of the $5 million-GTD, which means there could be a slight overlay in play.

This year’s WPT World Championship is the biggest since 2009, when Yevgeniy Timoshenko outlasted 338 players to win $2.1 million at Bellagio. That means first place should be well over $1 million in this year's edition.

After two starting days high-stakes poker pro Jason Koon leads the remaining 138 players with 252,800 chips.

Paul Volpe, Anthony Gregg, Keith Lehr, Lee Markholt and Athanasios Polychronopoulos are among the chip leaders.

Scott Seiver, who won the 2011 WPT World Championship, is also among the big stacks with 192,000 chips.

Meanwhile Mohsin Charania, John Racener, Matt Stout, Chris Moorman, Kara Scott, Scott Clements, Isaac Baron and Mike Matusow were all eliminated before Day 2.

Day 2 begins at 12 p.m. local time and you can follow along via the WPT live updates.

Interestingly this year's WPT World Championship is running in parallel with Party Poker's New Jersey Championship of Online Poker so anyone who busts can log onto their computer and take a shot at one of the 15 events in the $600k-GTD series.
