Brunson, who is 79 years old, entered Day 4 of the 2013 Main Event with 626,000 chips. It was enough to place him in the top 30 counts out of the 666 players to start the day.
Despite a slow start that saw Brunson drop 150,000 chips, he managed to stabilize and is still above average after the bubble burst at 648 players remaining.
Ironically Brunson was initially going to skip the 2013 WSOP entirely but is now on route to his best finish in the Main Event in nine years.
Brunson’s last cash at the WSOP Main Event came in 2004 when he finished 53rd out of 2,576 entrants for $45,000. That year Greg “Fossilman” Raymer took the top prize for $5 million.
This year the first-place prize will be worth considerably more at $8.3 million.
Brunson had 469,000 after the first level of play on Day 4 of the 2013 Main Event. Follow our Main Event live updates to see if Brunson can better his 2004 finish.
Update: Doyle Brunson busted in 409th place.
