Phil Ivey and President Barack Obama have released their NCAA March Madness picks to the public.

That is most likely the only time you’ll see those two names mentioned in the same sentence.

Ivey gave his picks to NBC Sports blog Off the Bench. He chose Louisville as the national champion and Florida as the runner-up. Perhaps even more surprising, Ivey gave Off the Bench a quote.

“Defense wins Championships,” he told Off the Bench. “And from what I’ve seen this season, Louisville and Florida definitely have the best D in the country.”

Meanwhile Obama was also mentioned in the Off the Bench article and went a little more outside the box, choosing Indiana as the national champion over Louisville.

It’s questionable whose advice is better: the world’s best poker player or the man running the United States.

We’re betting Ivey has wagered slightly more on sporting events.

Negreanu Bad Beat from Premier League, Splashes the Pot

At this point you’ve got to wonder why Daniel Negreanu continues to play in televised poker games.

The Team PokerStars Pro, who is notoriously snake-bitten in poker TV shows, was eliminated from Premier League in, you guessed it, a bad beat last night.

Negreanu appeared to be a lock to make the final table as was all-in with Ace-Queen against Jonathan Duhamel’s paltry 7 4.

The board ran out A 6 4 K and Negreanu appeared destined for a double.

Instead the board finished with the 4 and Negreanu was eliminated from Premier League VI.

The bad beats may be getting to Negreanu. In an uncharacteristic move, he threw his chips across the table after busting from the tournament, according to the Party Poker blog.

The fourth and final heat of the Premier League VI is expected to conclude later today with playoff matches set for tomorrow.

Steve O'Dwyer makes 7th on the GPI

The Global Poker Index released its updated rankings earlier this week and Steve O’Dwyer was one of the biggest movers thanks to his recent score at EPT London.

O’Dwyer finished EPT London in fifth place for $219k, which was enough to vault him seven spots into seventh place overall.

The Las Vegas resident has a history of dominating European events and made four major final tables in Europe over the last few years.

O’Dwyer’s highest rank on the GPI ever was on June 18, 2012, when he managed to peak in second place.

At the other end Michael Mizrachi dropped two spots and landed just outside the top 10.

In the yearly rankings Paul Volpe jumped an astounding 19 places thanks to making back-to-back WPT final tables. He’s now number one, just edging out Mike Watson.

Check the GPI for complete rankings this week.
