The veteran tourney pro -- with several previous wins on his résumé but no EPT gold -- this time rode his final-table chip lead all the way to the victory circle and a massive €835,000 payday.
Runner-up Sotirios Koutoupas, who battled Jelassi for three hours heads-up before finally succumbing, took home €510,000 and his biggest career cash by far.
Third-place finisher David Boyaciyan, who amazingly finished second to German Martin Finger in this event last year, earned €310,000 -- although it could have been almost €100k more after a three-way deal fell through on his insistence.
Boyaciyan Demands Bigger Cut, Play Carries On
What had been a somewhat docile final table took a turn for the dramatic when UK pro Ben Warrington hit the rail in fourth.
The final three players agreed to a deal in principal that would pay Jelassi and Koutoupas, ahead in the chip counts but fairly even, €500,000 apiece and give Boyaciyan €415,000.
€90,000 extra would go to second and €150,000 extra to first to finish the cut of the prize money.
Boyaciyan, however, had second thoughts as he felt he had the talent edge on Koutoupas and deserved more. Depite an hour-long dinner break to resolve their differences, the deal fell apart and they played on with the payouts as is.
Boyaciyan fell in third shortly after and Koutoupas - whose animosity over the deal snub lingered a bit - and Jelassi reaped the benefits.
With the full first-place payout as listed, Jelassi pushes his career earnings well over the $2 million mark.
