WCOOP Day 6: Petersen, Rousso Put on a Show

It was another big day all around for Team PokerStars Pro as Vanessa Rousso made it into the final two tables of Event 13 while Matthias De Meulder bubbled that event by coming seventh place.

Despite the strong efforts of the team, George Danzer and Eugene Katchalov remain the only PokerStars pros who have won WCOOP events this year. There’s a good chance that changes this weekend, however.

Here’s a look at the highlights from Day 6 of the PokerStars 2012 World Championship of Online Poker:

Event 13: $530 No-Limit Hold’em 6-Max Knockout

Online player Ajoin 21 defeated Greek poker pro Georgios “gkap13” Kapalas heads-up to win the very pro-heavy $540 No-Limit Hold’em 6-Max event yesterday.

The tournament drew 1,938 entrants to create a lucrative $782,952 prizepool with $195,738 set aside for bounties.

Established poker pros had a very strong presence in the event with George “Jorj95” Lind, Randy “nanonoko” Lew, Fatima Moreira, Eugene Katchalov and Ana Marquez all making the money.

Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Rousso had a very impressive run eventually busting in 12th place for $7,829.

Fellow Team PokerStars Pro Matthias De Meulder got sickeningly close to the final table as he busted in seventh place for $11,744.

That cleared the way for big stack Ajoin21 to take over the final table and eventually claim the WCOOP title by defeating Kapalas heads-up.

Event 15: $215 PLO 6-Max

PokerStars Team Online member Mickey “mement_mori” Petersen came within three spots of winning his first WCOOP title in Event 15.

The PLO 6-Max event drew 2,021 players to create a $404,200 prizepool. Numerous pros went deep including Russian K_0_S_T_Y_A, Chris “NigDawG” Brammer and Amit “AMAK316” Makhija.

Makhija actually bubbled the final table by coming in seventh place for $5,658 leaving Petersen as one of the short stacks entering the final table.

Petersen, who is a former PokerListings best bet for Denmark, put on a valiant effort at the final table, even getting lucky enough to crack pocket aces once, but eventually fell in fourth place when his pocket queens were beaten by a rivered flush.

The Danish pro picked up $23,241 for his efforts but will have to wait another day for his first WCOOP title.

With Petersen gone, the remaining three players quickly made a deal that spread most of the remaining cash evenly between them.

Mexican player cnew27 went on to beat kunkku heads-up to win the $51,391 first-place prize.

Event 16: $215 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw

With all the huge Hold’em and PLO events on Day 6, Event 16 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw slipped quietly under the radar.

The tournament still attracted a respectable field of 423 players to create a prizepool of $84,000, easily smashing the $50,000 guarantee.

Poker pros were not as visible in this event as George “Jorj95” Lind, Charlotte “Sjlot” van Brabander and recent hot-hand George Danzer were among the few notables to make the money.

Online poker player (RIP)C.McRae entered the final table dead last in chips but battled his way to heads-up where he was a 3.5-1 underdog to DYBYDX.

(RIP)C.McRae repeatedly asked for a deal heads-up but DYBYDX declined every time. It eventually worked out for (RIP)C-McRae as he overcame his chip deficit and won the tournament outright for $17,343.

Event 17: $320 No-Limit Hold’em [10 minute levels]

The semi-turbo Event 17 drew 2,372 players who would play down to a winner in just eight hours and 19 minutes.

The pros were out in full force in this one with Pius Heinz, Vanessa Rousso, Jason Mercier, Vanessa Selbst, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Eugene Katchalov, Vickey Coren and Daniel Negreanu all looking to win a WCOOP bracelet.

Fortunately for everyone else in the event, all the aforementioned names busted before the cash. Johnny Lodden was the only PokerStars Pro to cash, as he finished in 202nd place.

German Umumba entered the final table as one of the middle stacks but by the time he entered heads-up play against Slayer_pol he had accumulated a massive 3-1 chip lead.

Umumba beat Slayer_pol to win the WCOOP title and $90,659 in cash.
