Just visit our Competition of the Month page and answer the skill-testing question to put your name in the hat.

“This month the timing is tight so whoever wins will have to snap-book flights to Madrid,” said PokerListings.com Editor in Chief Matt Showell.

“Starting next month we'll be giving winners at least a month advance notice so they'll have plenty of time to make plans.”

Every month PokerListings.com will be giving away tickets to sports and entertainment events around the world, along with luxury hotel accommodations.

“We work hard to provide value for our readers with our content and signup bonuses but this is a way for us to extend that idea beyond poker,” said Showell.

Daily 3-Bet: Ivey League, Bank Woe, Super System 2k

Any suggestions for a future 3-Bet, feel free to drop a note in the comments.

Today in the 3-Bet we find the fuzzy picture around the new Ivey League coming into focus, poker pros sharing one of the lesser known problems of being a poker pro and an autographed copy of iconic poker book Super System 2 up for sale on Amazon.

1) Ivey League Takes Shape, Prioritizes Training

Aaron Jones
The Natural.

With 30 signed pros, a semi-developed website and a lot of cryptic allusions to being a “social poker and training site," the future shape of IveyPoker has been a topic of much discussion.

The fuzzy picture is a bit clearer today, though, with yesterday’s announcement that IveyPoker bought poker training site LeggoPoker and will combine efforts to create something called the “Ivey League.”

The best guess says Aaron Jones, the former owner of Leggo, is the Ivey League will be live in a couple of months and will deliver some of the best training content ever - spearheaded by Ivey himself. Announcing the deal on his LeggoPoker blog, Jones says:

"I no longer own Leggo, I sold it to Phil Ivey. In the summer we will launch Ivey League, a training site that is more comprehensive than Leggo was ever able to be.

"I want to keep the same mission Leggo has always had at the core, but expand our ability to educate on Live Tournaments, PLO, and even Mixed Games. The additional resources Ivey Poker offers will make this all possible"

"This probably sounds far fetched to all of you. After spending time with Phil recently, I can assure you that his level of excitement for this project is very high." Read more here.

2) Katchalov Cut Off By Chase Bank

Eugene Katchalov
Money not good at, uh, the bank?

Being a professional poker pro comes with a wide range of hurdles, from the emotional roller coaster of variance to epicly long hours surrounded by foul-smelling tablemates.

Something as simple as getting and keeping a bank account you'd think would be the least of your worries.

Not so, says PokerStars pro Eugene Katchalov, who blogged today about his recent woes with Chase Bank. Long story short, the bank closed his account for being "high-risk" due to frequent international wire transfers - despite knowing exactly what he does for a living.

"It all started in early 2012. My bank, JP Morgan Chase, sent me a notice. It said, 'Your account is being closed.' My response was basically a very confused, 'What the hell?'

"...Everything had always been great and there were never any issues. They really liked me and knew I was a poker player with lots of poker-related transactions and wires. The branch manager was even a poker fan of mine, which was kind of cool.

After a six or seven-month delay, "the back office people basically wound up saying to me, 'We don't want your business anymore.' The weirdest part is that I wasn't sending that many wires."

Turns out Katchalov isn't alone as several pros chimed in with their own bank woes:

@eugenekatchalov I had same experience with HSBC a few yrs ago, then it came out they've been laundering money 4 drug dealers n terrorists

— Olivier Busquet (@olivierbusquet) February 8, 2013

Same thing happened w/ me and @scotiabank in Canada :/“@eugenekatchalov: My new blog is out, check it out...pokerstarsblog.com/team_pokerstar…

3) Autographed Copy of Super System 2 for $2,000

Eric Drache Behind Doyle Brunson
A steal at $2k?

It's one of the most iconic poker books in history, strategy or otherwise, and you can now get a copy of it yourself for the low, low price of $2,000 on Amazon.

Not just any copy though - one signed by every co-author/contributor including, of course, Brunson himself. Who else does that include?

Crandell Addington Mike Caro Steve Zolotow Jennifer Harman Bobby Baldwin Daniel Negreanu Todd Brunson Lyle Berman Steve Lipscomb Avery Cardoza and Johnny Chan

Seems like a bargain when you think about it, really. Buy it here.

Castaignon Leads Final 8 at EPT Deauville, YoungSupremacy Lurking

$

Castaignon dominated Day 5 of the contest and saw his stack swell to a staggering 9.9 million after starting with 1.9 million. That’s nearly 50% of the chips left in play.

Walid Bou Habib is Castaignon’s closest opponent but he’s a distant second with 3.8 million chips.

There are no big-name pros in the final eight but skilled Lebanese online pro Jeff “YoungSupremacy” Hakim is looking to make some noise at his first EPT final table.

Unfortunately for Hakim he will be working from the short stack with 895,000 chips.

Hakim won’t be the only Lebanese player at the final table as both Habib and Joseph El Khoury hail from the country.

The final table is certainly an international affair with two Belgians, two Frenchman and one German.

It took roughly 13 hours to go from 23 players on Day 5 to the final table of eight players.

Mitchell Ousted Four Spots From Final Table

James Mitchell
James Mitchell

2010 Irish Open winner James Mitchell seemed destined for a spot at the final table with his solid play over the last two days but he finally fizzled out in 12th place.

Mitchell was playing from the short stack and shoved ace-seven into Noel Gaens' ace-jack.

Former chip leader Cyril Andre also hit the rail on Day 5 when his lost an all-important race with pocket fives to Remi Castaignon’s ace-five suited.

The final table begins at noon tomorrow. Here’s a look at the final-table chip counts:

1. Remi Castaignon – 9,900,000 2. Walid Bou Habib – 3,835,000 3. Enrico Rudelitz – 2,690,000 4. Noel Gaens – 1,720,000 5. Joseph El Khoury – 1,710,000 6. Robert Romeo – 1,440,000 7. Franck Kalfon – 1,195,000 8. Jeffrey Hakim – 895,000

Castaignon Holds On for EPT Deauville Title, €770k

Coming into the day as the overwhelming leader with 40% of the chips, Castaignon got involved in a huge pot early against German Enrico Rudelitz that almost ruined it for him.

Calling all the way down, Castaignon made a huge hero call on the river with fives on a Q 6 3 T 4 board only to see Rudelitz flip over queens for top set.

The 8-million chip pot gave Rudelitz the lead and the momentum. But as can often happen in poker, Castaignon kept his head in the game, battled back and eventually prevailed against Lebanon's Walid Bou Habib heads-up.

An insurance broker from a small town in the Pyreness, Castaignon earned €770,000 for the win.

Bou Habib took home €475,000 for second while Rudelitz eventually crashed out in 4th for €215,000.

Jeff "YoungSupremacy" Hakim, the best known player at the final table and one of three players from Lebanon, came in the short stack and got coolered early to finish in 8th.

Official EPT Deauville Results and payouts:

1. Remi Castaignon €770,000 2. Walid Bou Habib €475,000 3. Robert Romeo Belgium €275,000 4. Enrico Rudelitz €215,000 5. Franck Kalfon €165,000 6. Joseph El Khoury €125,000 7. Noel Gaens €87,800 8. Jeffrey Hakim €60,000

Ruzicka Wins EPT Deauville High Roller

On the other final table wrapping up today, Czech Vojtech Ruzicka earned his biggest career score by taking down the High Roller final table for €313,000.

Ruzicka outlasted a table filled with tough opponents including Bryn Kenney, Steven "Zugwat" Silverman, Tim Reilly, Martin Jacobson and 2010 WSOP Main Event champ Jonathan Duhamel.

The final eight and payouts:

1. Vojtech Ruzicka €313,000 2. Timothy Reilly €180,000 3. Alexandre Reard €105,700 4. Martin Jacobson €83,200 5. Bryn Kenney €64,100 6. Steven Silverman €47,500 7. Jonathan Duhamel €38,000 8. Alain Goldberg €28,500

Finishing 10th to bubble the final table but edge out Elisabeth Hille for last woman standing, it's safe to say i changed Baumman's life considerably.

Since, the Winamax-sponsored pro has been traveling around the world, playing a lot of poker tournaments and finding herself in the media spotlight at every turn.

Our colleague at PokerListings France, Fred Guillemot, recently had a chance to sit down with Baumann and fire off a quick round of the always-popular Proust Questionnaire.

You can find information on what a Proust Questionnaire actually is by clicking here.

A cat. I like cats, and it must be nice being a cat.

If you were a country?

Australia, I love Australia.

If you were a city?

Perth, because I loved living there the most. I lived there for a year when I was a student. That's actually where I discovered poker.

Is that why it's your favorite city?

No, it's not. It's just because there's the beach, it's a nice city to live in, people there are nice... It's got everything.

If you were a poker tournament?

The WSOP, clearly.

The Main Event?

Yes, might as well be.

Gaelle Baumann
The Queen of Hearts.

The Queen of Hearts, obviously.

Blue.

Pulp Fiction.

If you were a sport?

Skiing.

What's your main fault?

I'm too much of a perfectionist.

What's your favorite word?

“Rouflaquette” (the French word for “sideburns”). I just like that word, it sounds funny, doesn’t it ?

And the one you hate the most?

I can only think of 4-letter words, so I'm going to censor myself! (laughs)

People who can't admit they're wrong.

I would change many! But if I had to pick one... I would make myself more self-assured.

If you weren't a poker player, what job would you have liked to do?

Well, originally I was going for a career in the field of physics. So I guess becoming an astrophysicist would have been nice.

If God exists, what would you want him to tell you when you die?

I don't believe in God, but I'd like to hear that I've been “nice,” that I've led an exemplary life, even though that's not true at all! (laughs)

What would you like to be reborn as?

A plant would be nice, wouldn't it? (laughs)

I thought you'd go for a cat!

Yeah, an animal, why not... But maybe something that can fly. Like an eagle.

Weekly UK 3-Bet: Lil Dave Loss, Poker Rap Boss, Spinks Binks

$

0

Any items you see fit for a future 3-Bet may be left in the comments.

Today we bring you an intimate look at the worst downswing of David Nicholson's career, the impending departure of one of the Internet's lesser-known poker rap parody artists, plus news of a new career best by Exeter poker player Jon Spinks.

1) Lil Dave Nicholson Reflects on Biggest Downswing Ever

At just 23 years old, David Nicholson could publish an autobiography that would give Devilfish, Howard Marks and Hugh Hefner a run for their money.

But luckily for us he doesn't have to. He already reports everything on his personal blog.

nicholson 4
Nicholson writes about the toughest time of his career.

The latest from Nicholson is a look back at the worst downswing of his life. After 20 consecutive losing sessions he put virtual pen to online paper and explained what it's like to be in the midst of a career-defining cold streak.

As I did the sums and realised I was officially in my biggest ever downswing I got to thinking about how I'd been reacting to it, actually I'd  been reacting pretty well! I remember the first time I lost a lot of money and how it made me feel, my stomach churned, I got sweaty, paniced, my breathing went frantic and I couldn't sleep.

Filled with regret I dwelled on what had happened for days and days (maybe even months lol.) I remember clearly back then as well that the money (was a significant sum) wasn't on the forethought of my mind either, I'd lost, at a time when I never lost, and it hurt me, it really hurt me. I was embarrassed and felt like I could no longer validate my decision to play poker because of what I'd done.

The fact that at the age of 20 i'd lost more money than most people my age would earn in 12 months was nothing more than a pure annoyance.

Check Nicholson's blog for more.

2) Mason and Bergeron Take Rap Skills Down Under

The UK is set to lose one of its youngest talents as Ashley Mason prepares to emigrate to Australia.

Best known for winning the $10k WCOOP High Roller event in 2011 for a staggering $430,000, Mason has also contributed to the growing number of poker rap parody songs floating around the internet.

Here's his heavily satirical take on Chris Moorman and one of his horses.

3) Jon Spinks Sets New Personal Best

Jon Spinks has earned himself a career-best score of €141,200 after taking down the €2,200 NLHE side event at EPT Deauville.

Spinks, whose Twitter page states “I finish 4th at the World Series of Poker a little too often,” didn’t finish fourth this time as he overcame a final table that contained Jonathan Duhamel.

Shipped for €141.2k :) time to begin the journey home with @johneamespoker! #hitandrunthefrenchies

— Jon Spinks (@JonSpinks) February 7, 2013

The UK based players call these €2k EPT side events the John Eames Invitational Events due to the IveyPoker pro’s proficiency in them. But on this occasion Eames was nothing more than a chauffeur for the eventual winner Spinks!

Julius, who famously finished second at the 2012 PCA main event for $1.5 million, locked up the biggest prize in the Million yesterday thanks to a three-way deal but officially finished second to Estonian player parmupill.

All told over $2.72 million was awarded across the three biggest online poker tournaments this weekend with Stephen “stevie444” Chidwick, Amit “Amak316” Makhija, Ashley “DYBYDX” Mason and many more name-pros getting a piece of the cash.

Keep reading for highlights from the weekend's biggest online tournaments.

Julius Runner-Up in Sunday Million

Rewind almost exactly one year to February 13, 2012 and Kyle “Kjulius10” Julius was busy running through a field of 5,671 to take down his first Sunday Million and over $177,000.

It was barely a month after his seven-figure score in the Bahamas but this time Julius didn't have to settle for second place.

This weekend Julius came painfully close to repeating the feat, but despite not finishing first on paper he was able to secure the biggest prize thanks to a three-way deal.

7,848 players bought in to this week's Sunday Million and it got all the way down to the final three before a deal was discussed.

Julius took just under $200k while Estonian player parmupill took $170k and went on to become the event's official champion.

Finishing third and taking $156k was Romanian ragAAAila19.

Also cashing in the Million this week were Nick “FU_15” Maimone (73rd) and James “Andy McLEOD” Obst (83rd).

Chidwick Takes Second in Sunday 500

Steven “stevie444” Chidwick narrowly missed another major online title yesterday, finishing second out of 843 players in the Sunday 500 on PokerStars.

Chidwick, a top-ranked online pro who once won 101 seats to the WSOP Main Event in the same year, took down over $54,000 for his runner-up finish last night.

No deal was reached as Chidwick squared off heads-up, and ultimately lost, against Russian player Fofan10.

Also making deep runs in this week's Sunday 500 were Amit “AMAK316” Makhija (12th), Matthew Frankland (13th) and Johan “busto_soon” Van Til (16th).

One of the most successful poker tournament players of all time, Mizrachi topped a local-heavy field at the Emerald Casino to collect the third-ever South African title.

While the $101k won't add much to Mizrachi's $14m career earnings it does inch him up slightly closer to John Juanda for seventh place on poker's all-time money list.

It also gives him his first WSOP Circuit ring to add to his three WSOP bracelets and two WPT titles.

Mostly Local Field Shares $380k Prize Pool

Dominating much of the field with his play, Mizrachi eliminated six of the final eight players at the final table to secure the win.

Other than Mizrachi and poker icon Scotty Nguyen, the field was predominantly local with South Africans taking up the bulk of the cash spots.

With 116 total runners and a $3,300 buy-in, the prize pool topped $380,000.

The final nine and payouts:

1. Michael Mizrachi – $101,267 2. Karl Myburgh – $62,590 3. Markus Feurie – $44,565 4. Jarred Solomon – $32,372 5. Kinesh Pather – $23,980 6. Kenny Morgan – $18,103 7. Menesh Keshav – $13,924 8. Eric Brand – $10,907 9. Warren Zackey – $8,696

Ninth-place finisher Zackey won the first-ever WSOPC South Africa championship in 2011. For more info on the final table, visit WSOP.com

Giannetti even managed to find his way to the chip lead after being down to the short stack and on the brink of elimination a few times over the course of the day.

Salsberg also needed a series of double ups over the day to hang on for fifth place and make back-to-back WPT final tables.

Salsberg finished sixth at the Borgata Poker Open last week and is assured of at least matching that performance tomorrow.

Fish, Fortini in the Mix

Former November Niner Giannetti will start the final table wth just over 3 millions chips - about 500k ahead of veteran pro Daryll Fish in second.

Matt Salsberg
Back-to-back final tables for Salsberg.

Both Giannetti and Salsberg will be gunning for their second WPT titles. Giannetti won WPT Malta in 2011 while Salsberg triumphed at WPT Paris.

Hayden Fortini (1.6 million) and Danny Shiff (1.9 million) round out the final six.

A $323,804 payday is at stake for the winner with sixth place assured of $50,968.

Durrrr Rebounds, Up Nearly $2m on Full Tilt in Three Days

$

Dwan went on an 11,114-hand rampage on Full Tilt over the weekend that saw him eventually finish with $1.9 in profit, according to highstakesdb.com.

Durrrr spread his victories over a variety of games including $300/$600 PLO against Ben “Bttech86” Tollerene and 2-7 Triple Draw against Sauce1234, Rui Cao, patpatpanda, Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond and others.

Tollerene, one of durrrr’s biggest victims, made a small comeback on Monday when he beat Dwan for $246k.

Regardless of the setback, it was a remarkable three days for Dwan.

Dwan Bucks Losing Streak That Dates Back to 2011

Ilari Sahamies
Ziigmund is also back on FTP.

Even before Black Friday, Dwan was on a terrible run on Full Tilt Poker that saw him down $2.4 million, including some huge losses to Dan "jungleman12" Cates in the durrrr Challenge.

Since play was suspended on Full Tilt Dwan was content to play the high-stakes live games in Macau, although he was rumored to be several players on PokerStars.

It appeared Dwan’s online game was a bit rusty when Full Tilt returned in November as he quickly accumulated $987,000 in losses.

Dwan’s success wasn’t the only blast from the past on Full Tilt Poker this week.

Ilari Sahamies finally restored his iconic “Ziigmund” account and returned to the high-stakes games on the site.

Ziigmund stuck primarily to the $10/$20 and $25/$50 PLO games, small by his standards, but it’s difficult to imagine he’ll stay away from the nosebleeds for long.

Sahamies has traditionally performed better on PokerStars, where he's up over $1.6 million all-time, and is better known on Full Tilt Poker for insane swings.

Daily 3-Bet: Salsberg Heat, ISPT Flop, Poker + Kevin Faulk

$

0

Any suggestions for a future 3-Bet, feel free to drop a note in the comments.

Today in the 3-Bet we find Weeds producer and future Easy Game subject Matt Salsberg going back-to-back on the World Poker Tour, the International Stadiums Poker Tour flopping again this weekend and former Patriots running back Kevin Faulk offering up an indecent poker proposal.

1) Salsberg Makes Back-to-Back WPT Final Tables

Is there anyone in poker hotter than former-Weeds-producer-turned-poker-pro Matt Salsberg?

salsberg WPT winner
Salsberg: So hot right now.

After winning WPT Paris last September (just days after Showtime declined to pick up his new show, Whales), Salsberg now has back-to-back final tables on the WPT at the Borgata Open and Lucky Hearts Open.

Short stacked and at risk of elimination several times in Florida yesterday, Salsberg managed a string of double ups to crash the final table in fifth spot. He'll need some more run good to get a sniff at the win, but at this point we wouldn't bet against him at any price.

If we were executives at Showtime, we might take a second look at those scripts too.

If you want more of the Matt Salsberg story, you're in luck as we've lined him up to be a feature subject in our Easy Game mini-documentary series this month.

Stay tuned for more; watch Salsberg vie for his second WPT title on the live stream here.

2) ISPT Satellite Postponed After 2 Players Register

Prosper Masquelier
ISPT co-founder Prosper Masquelier.

We're now likely beating a dead horse here but it seems there's just no end to the International Stadiums Poker Tour comedy of errors.

After just 13 players made it through to the live Day 2 at Wembley via MyPoker.fr last week, things got even worse this weekend.

Just 2 players registered for the Day 1a satellite on Lock Poker forcing a "postponement" of the tournament until next weekend.

There were also some technical glitches on Lock which supposedly led to the postponement, but the number of registrants is a pretty safe sign of the overall enthusiasm/trust level out there for this thing.

If we were betting on it, we'd guess the ISPT shuts this thing down for good with a vague and surprisingly stand-offish press release within a couple weeks.

Wonder how much a deposit on Wembley Stadium runs and how much of it you can write off.

More on the ongoing ISPT debacle here.

3) Play Poker with RB Kevin Faulk for $1,250

Speaking of ego-driven enterpises, have you heard about Tiki Barber's Thuzio? If you haven't, you should read this amazing Grantland piece about it by Rembert Browne asap.

kevin faulk
Will fish for $.

The former New York Giants running back has a new "pay to hang out" with pro athletes project which has to be seen/read to believe.

Want a 10-minute phone call with Cedric Ceballos? $99 will get you one. And that's just one of hundreds of ways you can buy time from former pro athletes of various degrees of renown/price points.

One of those things? The presence of New England Patriots running back Kevin Faulk at your poker tournament for just $1,250 - something Browne says is inspired retailing:

“So first off, he's a genius, because he's the only one with a poker option. But think about this for a second. He's getting paid to come play poker.

“Which means he's essentially being given chips, thus never paying out of pocket for a game one has to assume he's obsessed with.

“This is one of the few win-wins in the land of Thuzio, because for the buyer, having Kevin Faulk come over and play poker is a great story, and obviously, for Kevin, it's a beautiful working of the system."

Check out an amazing sample of pro athlete hubris here. Book Faulk for your game (or a $1,500/hr fishing trip) here.

NOTE: Lunch or dinner with 2006 World Series of Rock Paper Scissors champ Annie Duke will cost you $1,000.

Coming into the final table with the chip lead, Giannetti held his edge over the course of the entire 115-hand final table before eliminating Lily Kiletto heads-up for the win.

Giannetti took home $323,804 for the win along with a seat in the $25k WPT Championship this Spring at the Bellagio. His previous WPT title came in 2011 at WPT Malta.

Kiletto, an investor, model and fashion designer from Washington state, came into the final table as the short stack but worked her way all the way up to a $191,880 payout.

Her previous best cash in a live tournament was $7,000.

Salsberg Run Ends Quickly

As for one of the hottest players on the tournament circuit right now, former Weeds producer Matt Salsberg, his dream run of back-to-back WPT final tables ended in just nine hands.

Matt Salsberg
Two sixth-place finishes in 12 days for Salsberg.

He got his stack in with jacks against Darryll Fish's 7 5 but lost out to a rivered straight to end his hopes of his own second career WPT title.

Still, adding his $50k cash to his sixth-place finish at the WPT Borgata Poker Open, Salsberg has almost $200k in earnings in less than two weeks.

Veteran poker pros Fish, Danny Shiff and Hayden Fortini finished in spots 3-5, respectively.

Official Final-Table Results and Payouts:

1: Matt Giannetti - $323,804 (incl. $25k seat in WPT World Championship) 2: Lily Kiletto - $191,880 3: Darryll Fish - $125,921 4: Danny Shiff - $86,946 5: Hayden Fortini - $64,160 6: Matt Salsberg - $50,968

For a full recap of all the final-table action, check the WPT Live Updates. The next stop on the World Poker Tour is in Baden, Austria from Feb. 19-24 and is followed immediately after by the WPT LA Poker Classic Feb. 23-28.

There's plenty of talent to choose from and as we've seen so often, success at the poker table is usually mirrored by success in other areas.

From astronaut-billionaires to childhood chess-prodigies this list gives a brief glimpse of the brilliant and unique characters that make up the poker community.

Keep reading to learn more about the 20 most fascinating people in poker and chime in using the comments to tell us who we forgot.

Steve Albini

steve albini
"I like noise. I like big-ass vicious noise that makes my head spin." - Steve Albini

If you were alive in the 1990s chances are you've heard Steve Albini's work, even if you've never heard his name.

A musician and audio engineer with credits like Nirvana's In Utero and the Pixies Surfer Rosa on his résumé, Albini estimates he's worked on as many as 2,000 albums in his career.

And, contrary to the industry standard, he never charges royalties for his work.

Away from the studio Albini's passion is poker, specifically Seven-Card Stud and Razz.

He's published coaching videos on the subject on Cardrunners.com and narrowly missed a final table at the 2010 WSOP in a $1,500 Seven-Card Stud event.

Jeff Sarwer

Jeff Sarwer
Jeff Sarwer

Few can boast the kind of eclectic background that molded Jeff Sarwer into the man he is today.

At age four Sarwer learned chess and by the time he was six he had so impressed the manager of the Manhattan Chess Club in New York he was granted a lifetime membership usually reserved for grandmasters.

At age eight, he was a world champion.

"Jeff at nine is stronger than Bobby (Fischer) was at 11," said Allen Kaufman, head of the American Chess Foundation.

Sarwer's childhood was anything but conventional as his father home-schooled him and his sister and traveled across North America living anonymously to stay ahead of social services, who had once taken custody of both children.

Now Sarwer plays poker and has racked up $630,000 in earnings on the live tournament circuit.

Heather Sue Mercer

Heather Sue Mercer has cashes at the WSOP and WPT but it's her back-story that makes her one of poker's most fascinating people.

Heather Sue Mercer
Heather Sue Mercer

In 1994 Mercer made history by earning a spot on Duke University's NCAA football team but was cut from the roster in 1996.

Mercer sued the school for discrimination and in 2000 was awarded $2 million.

Mercer was an all-state placekicker in high school but according to the school, and six other Duke kickers who testified in court, she lacked the skills necessary for Division I football.

But the jury agreed with Mercer, ruling that her sex was the motivating factor in how she was treated.

Mercer now runs a bakery in New York City with her two sisters and plays poker in Atlantic City and Las Vegas.

Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps
"You can't put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get." - Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps has been called a freak of nature, a machine built to swim, but poker players know him as an easy-going, approachable guy who loves poker.

The all-time Olympic medal-winning swimmer has been playing cards for years and he's been spotted playing live poker in London, Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

He also recently played his first-ever $10,000 tournament at the PCA in the Bahamas.

TMZ even reported that he won $100,000 in a high-stakes cash game in Las Vegas although Phelps denied the story.

If he needs more of a tie-in to poker, just consider that the bong in those infamous photos actually belonged to WCOOP winner Carter “ckingusc” King.

Andy Beal

Extensively detailed in the wonderful poker book The Professor, the Banker, and the Suicide King, Andy Beal is a self-made billionaire who played some of the highest-stakes poker in history against the toughest group of professionals to ever team up.

Beal's story is too long for a list like this. Luckily we've already written the internet's definitive Andy Beal biography.

A few of the highlights include winning $13.6 million from players like Doyle Brunson, Ted Forrest and Phil Ivey, and then losing $16 million back to Ivey just a week later.

He also funded his own space program with the intention of privatizing the space transportation industry and has a standing $100,000 prize for anyone able to disprove his complicated math calculations, known as “Beal's Conjecture”.

Forbes estimates put Beal's net worth at $7 billion, good for 133rd on its list of the world's richest people. Suffice to say, Beal's mystique far transcends a simple poker list.

Griffin Benger

Griffin Benger 3

We've been shining the spotlight on Canadian Griffin “Flush_Entity” Benger for a while now, including in an episode of our short documentary series Easy Game, but he's worth it.

Benger first found fame playing CounterStrike, a multi-player first-person shooter video game that took him around the world.

After making the switch to poker Benger has become the top-ranked online tournament player on the planet with over $4 million in earnings.

Benger is our number one pick for a major live win in 2013.

Fatima Moreira de Melo

Fatima Moreira De Melo
Fatima Moreira de Melo

One of two Olympic medalists on this list, Holland's Fatima Moreira de Melo took gold in Women's Field Hockey at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing.

She's now a professional poker player and a member of Team PokerStars Pro -- not to mention the recent winner of Benelux's Survivor.

As if those two things weren't enough to earn her a spot on this list, she has a Masters Degree in Law, has worked as a TV presenter for local and national stations in Holland and has a career as a singer.

To date de Melo has earned $232,000 playing live poker tournaments.

Chamath Palihapitiya
“I would crush Zuck heads-up.” - Chamath Palihapitiya

Chamath Palihapitiya

Born in Sri Lanka and raised in Canada, Chamath Palihapitiya has been playing high-stakes poker and making big waves in business for the last decade.

A part-owner of the Golden State Warriors and former VP for companies like AOL and Facebook, Palihapitiya got his start in poker while working in Finance on the East Coast.

Just a few years later he was skipping work to play the $200/$400 game at the Borgata.

Last year Palihapitiya entered the first-ever $1 million tournament, held at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.

Jon Finkel

According to poker pro and Magic: The Gathering veteran David Williams, if there was a Phil Ivey of MtG it would be Jon Finkel.

“In my eyes Finkel is the very best,” Williams told PokerListings.com.

Finkel is so legendary in the MtG world they even put his face on a card.

But while Finkel is extremely successful playing Magic, blackjack and poker, he's perhaps best known for two dates he had with Gizmodo.com reporter Alyssa Bereznak

The two were matched through dating site OKCupid and Bereznak went on to post a devastating review of her date that blew up all over the internet.

Vanessa Selbst

Vanessa Selbst is unquestionably one of the great poker minds of her generation.

Vanessa Selbst
Vanessa Selbst

She's the winningest female tournament player in history with two WSOP bracelets and over $7 million in earnings.

Incredibly she even won the NAPT Mohegan Sun main event two years in a row.

She was also the first openly gay poker pro. Ever.

Selbst has a law degree from Yale Law School and was head of the Queer-Straight Alliance at that school and hopes to earn enough money from poker to create a foundation to fight for civil rights in the US.

David Einhorn
David Einhorn

David Einhorn

Hedge fund manager David Einhorn is fascinating for many reasons, perhaps the least of which being his participation in the world's first $1 million buy-in poker tournament.

Einhorn finished third in the Big One for One Drop and donated the $4.3 million prize to City Year, an inner-city mentoring program operating across the US.

It wasn't too surprising considering the precedent he set in 2006 when he finished 18th in the WSOP Main Event and donated the entire $659k prize to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

If that's not fascinating enough, his company is also one of the biggest shareholders of one of the world's most notable companies, Apple.

Guy Laliberté

The 11th-richest person in Canada and the first Canadian space-tourist ever, Guy Laliberté could easily find himself on a list of most-fascinating people worldwide.

Guy Laliberte
"We are each but a quarter note in a grand symphony." - Guy Laliberté

From his roots as a street performer in Montreal to his development of the circus/acrobatics leviathan Cirque de Soleil, Laliberté has been an original his entire life.

In 2009 Laliberté visited the International Space Station and dedicated the trip to raising awareness for the water issues facing humankind.

Laliberté pledged $100 million of his own money to his charity One Drop, and also organized the world's first $1 million buy-in poker tournament to benefit the same organization.

Laliberté finished fifth in that event, donating the $1.83 million prize to One Drop.

Nate Silver

American statistician Nate Silver has absolutely blown up in the media this year after correctly predicting the outcome of every single state in the last presidential election.

Nate Silver
"Every four years in the presidential election, some new precedent is broken." - Nate Silver

Truth is, he's been making dead-on predictions in politics, sports and at the poker table for years.

Author of the New York Times best-seller The Signal and the Noise, Silver played poker professionally online in the mid-2000s.

For more info check out the interviews we did with him at the World Series of Poker and the Aussie Millions.

Jennifer Tilly

Born in LA but raised on a small island near Vancouver, Canada, Jennifer Tilly has been a fixture on the poker scene since she won a WSOP bracelet in 2005.

Formerly married to Simpsons co-creator Sam Simon and now with poker pro Phil Laak, Tilly plays big buy-in tournaments and televised cash games around the world.

Tilly brings an impressive acting resume to the table including an Oscar-nomination for Best Supporting Actress in the Woody Allen film Bullets Over Broadway.

jentillycannes2
"If I was like some of the characters I played, I'd probably be dead by now." - Jennifer Tilly

In 2008 Tilly announced that she was giving up her dream of playing poker professionally, but that she'd continue to play recreationally.

"I love poker but greatness in poker is an elusive dream. There are too many variants. Trying to find validation in poker is like trying to find a virgin in a whorehouse.

“I'm not giving up poker entirely – gambling is an addiction after all. I'm just going to treat it more like a hobby and less like a career,” she told Bluff Magazine at the time.

Gaëlle Garcia Diaz

Born of Spanish and Belgian parents supermodel Gaëlle Garcia Diaz has been the Belgian TV presenter for the PokerStars European Poker Tour for the last couple years.

She's also appeared in such wonderful publications as Playboy and Che Magazine. We can't remember at the moment whether her clothes joined her in those appearances.

Diaz first appeared on the poker world's radar when she got a PokerStars commercial. From there she made it onto the EPT presenting team and can now be found in front of the cameras at most EPT events.

Video is the best way to get to know her so we'll just go ahead and post that.

Dan "Jungleman" Cates

In terms of online poker success stories it doesn't get much better than Dan “Jungleman12” Cates.

In 2008 he made a small deposit and started working his way up the stakes. In 2010 he profited roughly $5.5 million on Full Tilt Poker alone.

Dan Cates
Dan Cates

Particularly impressive was his absolute domination of Tom Dwan in the yet-to-be-completed durrrr Challenge.

Cates is a nomad, traveling the world playing online and live poker for astronomical stakes. Originally from Maryland, the last time we saw Cates he was leaving Malta bound for Morocco, with a 16-hour layover in Libya along the way.

It was right after we shot an episode of Easy Game with him in the streets of Valletta.

You might as well throw a dart at a world map if you're looking for Jungleman. He could be anywhere.

Dutch Boyd

Russ
Dutch Boyd

If Hollywood was looking for a life story to put to film they could do worse than Russell Aaron Boyd, known to poker players as Dutch.

Boyd started college at 12 years old and had earned a law degree by age 18.

But instead of becoming a lawyer Boyd began playing poker. Over the next few years he won two WSOP bracelets and finished 12th in the Main Event in 2003, the year of Chris Moneymaker's historic victory.

During this time Boyd had opened an online poker room, PokerSpot, which eventually went bust and failed to refund customers roughly $400,000.

He made news recently by being turned down for a job at a call center.

Isai Scheinberg

For someone as instrumental in making the poker world what it is today surprisingly little is known about PokerStars founder and head honcho Isai Scheinberg.

He has zero interaction with the poker community or the media but, nevertheless, if this was a list of the most powerful people in the poker world, he'd be number one.

This Israeli-Canadian pioneered an international computer code when he worked for IBM in the '90s and started Rational Entertainment Enterprises, the company that would birth PokerStars, in Toronto circa 2001.

Almira Skripchenko
Almira Skripchenko

Since then Scheinberg has steadily grown his online poker room into the single biggest poker brand on the planet.

Almira Skripchenko

The second chess player on this list, Almira Skripchenko has been playing poker since the early 2000s.

The daughter of a Ukranian father and Armenian mother, both chess coaches, Skripchenko holds FIDA International Master and Woman Grandmaster titles in chess.

She was ranked 44th in the world among female chess players in the 2012 FIDE World Rankings.

In 2001 she was named “Best Sportsperson” in Moldova and awarded the country's Order of National Merit.

As a poker player Skripchenko has earned over $260,000 playing live tournaments. Her biggest result to date was a $84k third-place finish on the France Poker Tour in 2010.

Until early 2012 Skripchenko was a member of Team Winamax. She plays online using the screen-name chessbaby

Nolan Dalla

It's safe to say the World Series of Poker would not be what it is today without Nolan Dalla.

Poker author, historian and self-proclaimed contrarian, Dalla has worked behind the scenes at the WSOP for years coordinating media and players.

Nolan Dalla
Nolan Dalla

Dalla has also contributed to PokerListings.com including his groundbreaking interview with poker legend Amarillo Slim.

The author of One of a Kind: The Rise and Fall of Stuey “The Kid” Ungar, Dalla took a very unusual route to the poker world.

In the late 1980s Dalla worked for the US Department of State and worked at the American Embassy in Bucharest, Romania.

He was there for the fall of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and the end of Communism in Eastern Europe. He also reportedly hosted the most popular poker games on the Eastern European diplomatic circuit.

Dalla returned to the US in the early 90s to work as a speechwriter and information officer at the Turkish Embassy in Washington, DC.

Much of his writing now appears on his own website.

Daily 3-Bet: Stratospheric Poker, Schemion Grabs POM, PokerStars LIVE

If you ever have a suggestion for a future 3-Bet piece you can leave it in the comments.

In today’s Daily 3-Bet we’ll take a look at German MTT-machine Ole Schemion winning Player of the Month, PokerStars opening a live poker room in Spain while the Stratosphere launches an online poker room.

1) Stratosphere Launches Free Online Poker Site

Stratosphere Hotel Tower
The Stratosphere

At this point in time it’s getting easier to keep track of the Las Vegas properties that DON’T have a deal with an online poker site.

The iconic Stratosphere, which was conceived by noted poker player Bob Stupak, has attached itself to the Ongame network, which launched a free-to-play poker client acePLAYpoker.com this week.

The site currently doesn’t offer any real-money games but that could change in the near future.

“With the launch of this free to play website, we can now bring the excitement of play found at our properties to anyone with Internet access, no matter their location,” said Alec Driscoll, Director of Gaming Development for ACEP.

“We are also positioning ACEP and acePLAYpoker.com for the potential approval of legalized online gaming.”

The Stratosphere’s parent company, American Casino & Entertainment (ACEP), also announced that one of its other properties, Bally’s, will utilize the Ongame platform.

The real question is when the Gold Coast gets in on the party.

2) Ole Schemion Becomes First GPI Player of the Month

oleschemion
Ole! Ole! Ole!

Ole Schemion is starting 2013 the same way he ended 2012: by crushing poker rankings.

Schemion is the first Global Poker Index Player of the Month after an exceptional run in January that included three final tables.

The German finished fourth in the PCA $25k High Roller event, fifth in the PCA $10k 6-Max and finally second in the Aussie Millions $5k NLHE Mix-Max. In total he earned 290 points, more than enough to give him top honors.

Schemion is 18th in the overall GPI rankings but climbing fast. He’s already 7th in this year’s Player of the Year Rankings and first in the German rankings.

Last year Schemion recorded $2 million in tournament winnings but he’s already up to $450k in 2013.

The newly-launched Player of the Month is calculated in a similar manner to GPI’s Player of the Year standings with one notable exception: There is no limit to the number of cashes a player can include.

The February Player of the Month race is already underway with Schemion’s countryman Igor Kurganov in the lead, thanks in to final tabling the $250k Super High Roller, the $100k Super High Roller and winning the $25k High Roller outright.

3) PokerStars Opens First Live Poker Room in Spain

Madrid PokerStars LIVE
PokerStars LIVE

While some long-standing brick and mortar casinos are moving into the online world, PokerStars is doing the opposite.

Last month news broke that PokerStars was going through its plans to purchase the Atlantic Club in NJ and this week the site opened its first live poker room in Madrid, Spain.

The swank-looking facility is located in the Casino Gran Madrid and offers 200 tables of poker action.

One would assume the new poker room will have a great deal of cross-promotion with PokerStars.es.

The new location is the first PokerStars poker room in Europe. It falls under the banner of the site’s new LIVE brand.

PokerStars already operates a poker room in the Grand Waldorf in Macau and has plans to open a PokerStars LIVE room in the Hippodrome Casino in London.

No word on their plans to purchase the state of New Jersey.

GPI Bans Pasqualini and Rossi for Alleged Partouche Cheating Video

$

Jean-Paul Pasqualini and Cederic Rossi will no longer be included in the GPI's live poker tournament rankings.

A video compilation of 18 hands played by Pasqualini and Rossi was posted roughly two weeks ago by Nordine Bouya, another French player.

The hands provide compelling evidence that the two players were using hand signals to communicate their hole cards to one another.

The video has since gone viral online and today the GPI took action and banned them from its worldwide poker rankings.

Global Poker Index CEO Alex Dreyfus released a blog post elaborating on the announcement. Here is an excerpt:

Recently, some information was made public about a very suspicious incident of cheating, which in poker is equivalent to fraud. We spent a lot of time analyzing the facts, checking the accuracy of the video and its sources. We also solicited the point of view of the GPI’s top 50 players.

The feedback from the industry and the players has been very clear - they were in support of suspending Jean-Paul Pasqualini and Cedric Rossi from inclusion in the Global Poker Index.

By taking this action, we are not claiming that we know they cheated – this is up to the casinos and the overseeing regulatory bodies to decide. What we are convinced of is that there wasn’t fairness at the table. Unfair behavior will not be promoted via the Global Poker Index. It goes against everything I’m trying to do to promote poker, players and events.

Here is the video compilation that led to Pasqualini and Rossi being banned from the GPI.

Tony G, Phil Laak Join Premier League VI Lineup

Tony G has a long history of success at Premier League events dating back to 2008. The Lithuanian made the final table of Premier League II, III and the fifth edition last year where he finished fifth for $100,000.

“I have played every season of the PartyPoker.com Premier League – I would never miss it as it is one of the best events in poker in my eyes and I am going for the win,” said Tony G.

Meanwhile Laak nearly won the Premier League last year but ended up finishing in third place for $175,000. Scott Seiver went on to beat Dan “jungleman12” Cates heads-up to win that edition of the Premier League for $500k.

Laak also finished sixth in Premier League IV in 2010. Neither Tony G or Laak have ever won the heat-based tournament outright.

Tony G and Laak join a lineup of players for Party Poker VI that already includes Antonio Esfandiari, Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu and last year’s winner Scott Seiver.

Ten more players will be added over the coming weeks to bump the total up to 16 players.

This year the Premier League will take place at Aspers Casino in London from March 17-23 with the entire event scheduled to be televised at a later date.

According to the official schedule that was released today the Main Event will begin July 9 and run nine days with play being halted when the final table is set on July 15.

The 2013 WSOP will also feature the first-ever guaranteed event as the one of the opening events, a $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em tournament, will offer a $1 million-guaranteed first-place prize. Organizers are dubbing it the Millionaire Maker.

“Dreams are dealt each year at the World Series of Poker,” said Ty Stewart, Exec. Director of the WSOP.

“From the opening weekend, where we will make yet another millionaire, to the Main Event, which awards the largest single prize in the world, the WSOP is an annual affirmation about the strength and global appeal of the game.”

2013 Schedule Includes $111,111, $1,111 Buy-in One Drop Events

Final table
There's no Big One on the 2013 schedule.

Although there is no $1 million buy-in tournament on this year’s schedule, charity One Drop will nonetheless have a presence.

This year there will be two One Drop tournaments, one with an $111k buy-in and the other a more manageable $1,111, known as the Little One for Big Drop.

In an unusual twist the WSOP has decided to officially permit men in the Ladies Event on June 28. The only caveat is that they must pay $10,000 instead of the standard $1,000.

The physical layout of the WSOP will remain largely unchanged from last year with the massive Pavilion, Amazon and Brasilia ballrooms all dedicated to poker.

You can view the complete 2013 schedule below. Here are more highlights:

$1,500 buy-in Millionaire Maker on June 1 will offer a guaranteed $1 million first-place prize. Two One Drop tournaments. One will have an $111k buy-in, the other will be $1,111. Main Event will run nine days from July 6-15. The first bracelet event will be a $5k NLHE on May 29 The schedule also features the first ever turbo event on June 19 with a $1,000 buy-in. Ladies Event is on June 28. As usual it will have a $1,000 buy-in. This year men can officially buy-in as well, albeit for $10,000. Main Event final table will switch back to November, instead of October. There will be an Open Face Chinese Poker tournament but it won't be a bracelet event.

Any suggestions for a future 3-Bet, feel free to drop a note in the comments.

Today in the 3-Bet we find PokerStars pro Jason Mercier talking about his brutal 2012 and big plans for 2013, Xuan Liu offering up her time for a hang out and a charitable donation and we revisit poker's most successful couples.

1) Mercier Talks Brutal 2012, Sets $1m Goal for 2013

Brutal year behind, big year ahead.

Tell someone in the real world you made $500k last year but it sucked, you’ll probably get punched in the face. In the poker world, though, you might -- might -- get a bit of sympathy. Still, likely a punch in the face.

Such was life for PokerStars pro Jason Mercier last year. Despite over half a million in tourney cashes, Mercier says in his latest blog post it was his first losing year as a pro.

Some huge cash-game losses (including $500k at the LAPC in Feb.) rattled his confidence and he says it took the full year to recover, setting him up for, he hopes, a better 2013:

“When you feel like you can't win a hand and lose so much in such a short period of time, you start to question whether or not you even know what you're doing at the table.

“That can be very dangerous, to both your bottom line and your confidence. You really have to grit your teeth and stick to your game.

“It took me a while to get some confidence back. But I kept plugging away at it and got some momentum going towards the end of the year. I think I'm going to carry that forward throughout a very busy 2013.

“My goal for the year is to make a million dollars. Not to have a million dollars in Hendon Mob entries; to have a million more dollars at the end of the year than I had at the beginning.”

2) Xuan Liu Joins in St. Jude’s Fundraising

The poker world jumped all over Daniel Negreanu's fundraising mission for St Jude's Hospital this week, already contributing over $158,000 to the cause - well over his original aim of $100k.

Inspired by Negreanu’s impassioned plan and generosity in matching donations up to $50,000, poker pro Xuan Liu has joined in with her own offer.

Beyond donating her own money, she’s putting up her own time for anything from poker coaching to a lunch date. Keep your mind out of the gutter though - she has a boyfriend.

Check the clip below and donate to Liu here; donate to Negreanu’s efforts here.

3) 20 Highly Successful Poker Couples

It's kind of hard to avoid talking about it today so we're just gonna come right out and say it.

We have a soft spot for poker couples. It's embarrassing, but we do.

Given a bunch of factors – gender imbalance, isolation, variance, downswings, etc – finding and keeping a relationship in poker might be one of the toughest things in life to pull off.

To do it and win a ton of money is pretty much unfathomable. So as a tribute to the effort it has to take to defeat the odds and find love in poker, we put together a list of 20 of our favorite poker couples last week.

If we had to pick a favorite favorite?

It might just be Lex Veldhuis and Evelyn Ng, who successfully combine so many levels of shared nerdom, genius and profit it's unfair really.

Check out our full list of highly successful poker couples here. If you're really just into lists of 20 things, here's our 20 Most Fascinating People in Poker list.

The online tournament will rival some of the biggest live tournaments in the world with a minimum of $1 million guaranteed for the first-place finisher alone.

"I'm going to stock up on food and drink so I'm ready to grind this one!" said Team PokerStars Pro Lex Veldhuis.

"It's so big that it's like playing an EPT online."

Since being introduced in 2006 the Sunday Million has become the richest weekly online tournament in the world with first-place prizes that regularly exceed $200,000.

The biggest Sunday Million ever took place during PokerStars’ 10th anniversary when the tournament attracted 62,116 players and created a prizepool of $12.4 million

Eventual winner Kyle "First-Eagle" Weir ended up taking down $1.1 million for first place.

As usual it will cost $215 to buy into the Sunday Million but PokerStars is running several satellites for the big event including a 1,000-seat tournament for $11. Players can also freeroll their way in on FPPs.

What’s more, players who sign up through PokerListings currently receive a 100% deposit match up to $600 and have access to a number of freerolls including a monthly one that awards two Sunday Million tickets and $570 in cash.

Happy Valentine's Day from the WSOP.Here's your 2013 schedule: wsop.com/n/38P

— WSOP(@WSOP) February 14, 2013

The day the @wsop comes out with its schedule is like Christmas morning for me.

— Eric Crain (@EricCrain) February 14, 2013

Love what the @wsop did with the Ladies' event this year. Excellent creativity to keep out douche bag guys unless they wanna spend 10x buyin

— Dan O'Brien (@DanOBrienPoker) February 14, 2013

pretty awesome schedule, including a $111K buyin tournament, announced for @wsop! #cantwaitwsop.com/tournaments/

— Jason Somerville (@JasonSomerville) February 14, 2013

Bravo @wsop addressing the issue of "men" playing ladies events by making it a $10k and giving ladies a $9k discount! Very clever!

— Daniel Negreanu (@RealKidPoker) February 14, 2013

So the #WSOP FINALLY made a stand and made the ladies event $10k with a discount to $1k for actual ladies. Should keep the tossers away. #WP

— Sam Razavi (@Sam_Razavi) February 15, 2013

Nevada explicitly carved out of its anti-discrimination law "differential pricing" based on gender. #WSOP smart to use it.

— whodoes (@whodoesblog) February 14, 2013

I think I would actually pay $10K to get into the Senior's Event. #WSOP

— Shane Schleger (@ShaneSchleger) February 14, 2013

Pretty sure at this price structure the Ladies in the Ladies Event @wsop will actually want a few brave men to enter. Well done #WSOP

— Matt Glantz (@MattGlantz) February 14, 2013

Hahaha brilliant. WSOP made the ladies event a $10k buy-in, but Ladies get in for $1k. Cue the transgender related debacle.

— Eric Baldwin (@basebaldy) February 14, 2013

Love what the @wsop did with the Ladies' event this year. Excellent creativity to keep out douche bag guys unless they wanna spend 10x buyin

— Matt Matros (@Matt_Matros) February 15, 2013

Notable omissions from wsop 2013 schedule. Limit shootout gone. Only one stud high event. Plo/nl heads up gone. Horse 10k gone.

— Allen Kessler (@AllenKessler) February 15, 2013

In the ten minutes I spent looking at @wsop schedule, I went from wanting to play a ton, to playing the fewest events I've ever played.
