Ivey Foiled Again, Out in Third in $5k Omaha-8

Ivey entered Day 3 of Event 24 $5,000 Omaha-8 as one of the chip leaders and dominated play for the majority of the day before finally succumbing to the rail in third place after a lengthy three-handed battle against Scotty Nguyen and Joe Cassidy.

The third place finish comes less than a week after Ivey finished second to Andy Frankenberger in the $10k Pot-Limit Hold’em event.

Ivey will pick up $136,046 for coming in third place but that’s likely little consolation for the man who allegedly has millions in bracelet bets. Ivey now has four cashes at the 2012 WSOP including three final tables.

It was past 3 a.m. when Ivey finally busted so Scotty Nguyen and Joe Cassidy agreed to come back at 2 p.m. to play heads-up for the bracelet and $294,777.

Scotty Nguyen has a shot at winning his sixth WSOP bracelet.

 

Nguyen, Cassidy to Play for Bracelet

If Nguyen wins tomorrow it will be his sixth WSOP bracelet while long-time pro Cassidy could finally break through with his first bracelet. Cassidy will take a 3-1 chip lead into the heads-up match in 11 hours.

Day 3 of Event 24 began with 27 players chasing the bracelet.

Raymond Davis, Stephen Chidwick and Andreas Krause were amongst the players who busted in the first few hours of play to set an epic final table of nine that included Phil Ivey, Joe Cassidy, Scotty Nguyen, Mike “The Mouth” Matusow and Bart Hanson.

As might be expected the marquee final table drew one of the biggest crowds of the 2012 WSOP.

The Mouth was silenced early when he played a three-way pot against Ivey and Nguyen. Matusow picked up $34,748 for coming in eighth.

Former PokerRoad radio host Hanson didn’t last much longer as he busted in seventh place to a rampaging Ivey for $45,085.

Eli Doft, Gregory Jamison and Meng La busted in relatively short order to set up an epic three-handed battle between Nguyen, Ivey and Cassidy.

It took more than three hours to find the third place finisher, which eventually turned out to be Phil Ivey.

Ivey was beat down to a few big bets on several occasions but managed several fortuitous double ups. The comeback was permanently halted, however, when Cassidy busted him with pocket kings.

Action in the contest resumes at 2 p.m Thursday.
