Having begun quietly yesterday with the $500 Casino Employees event, today’s $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em event is expected to draw a crowd but it stands in stark contrast to the high-stakes action of last year’s kick-off event, the $25,000 Heads-Up Championship.
In fact, the 2012 WSOP will run for more than a week before the first $10,000 buy-in event begins.
In 2011 the first $1,500 Hold’em event drew 865 players and boasted a star-studded final table with pro Allen Bari winning his first bracelet. Maria Ho came in second to secure the biggest WSOP prize ever won by a female.
Poker players and industry experts are split on their predictions for this year’s attendance, but when registration closes in the first bracelet event this afternoon we’ll have at least a preliminary indication.
