Gorodinsky now has 1771.21 points while Paul Volpe has been pushed into 2nd with 1,631.59.

Volpe grabbed the lead early on in the summer after finishing 2nd in the $10,000 Heads-Up Championship and the $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Championship.

These two finishes account for about half of Volpe’s points and put him comfortably in the lead until recently.

Olivier Busquet was closest to Volpe with 1,395.66 points while Gorodinsky was off in a distant 7th with 1,240.08 points.

Then Gorodinsky locked in another 531.13 points for winning the Poker Players Championship and jumped into the lead.

Capturing the Lead

The race has been very competitive so far and even Brian Hastings and Max Pescatori --who won two bracelets this summer-- aren’t in the top 5.

Gorodinsky has had a good summer so far, in addition to his win yesterday, he finished 2nd to Phil Hellmuth in the $10,000 Razz championship.

Gorodinsky also finished 3rd in the $5,000 NLHE 6-Max and bubbled the $10,000 Stud Championship final table.

“Obviously I'm running good you know,” Gorodinsky said.

“I’d like to think that I'm playing great, I'm making all the right decisions, but the cards are just hitting me in the face I'm running really good

“I don't know what else to say, it's been a good summer.”

There are still several events left this summer and WSOP-E in Berlin in the fall so the POY race is still wide open.

Dreaming About Mixed Games

But despite what happens, Gorodinsky says he’s at least achieved one of his dreams.

“[Winning the $50K Championship] is literally something that I've gone to bed dreaming about,” Gorodinsky said.

“And it's just cool to like legitimately realize the dream.”

It was an uphill battle for Gorodinsky from the beginning, who was sick at the start of the tournament.

“There's been the flu going around that I caught the day before this tournament started,” Gorodinsky said.

“And I hate playing sick and I hate when other people do it.

“I just had to make an exception for this tournament, and I'm happy I did.”

While the championship attracted the biggest names in the game, it attracted fewer than it ever has.

This year’s championship was the smallest on record with 84 entries.

Some blamed the low turnout to the new format, a 10-game mix.

While some players had issue with this, Gorodinsky said he enjoyed the new format.

Enjoying the New Format

“I play all the games and [Badugi and no-limit 2-7] are games that I've played a ton,” Gorodinsky said.

“Badugi's actually one of my favorite games, I think it's a really complex, good game.

“Maybe they kind of scared some people away, but I like it personally.”

Another player who said he liked the new format was Jean-Robert Bellande, who had a big lead for most of the final table.

Bellande also had the majority of the support from but Bellande missed out on the bracelet again.

Gorodinsky also got denied a few bracelets this summer and was glad he could finally seal the deal.

“There was a time here when I got like really short I thought, I can't do this again,” Gorodinsky said.

“I lost heads up to Phil Hellmuth, I can't lose heads-up to JRB or I'm never going to hear the end of it and it's just going to be so painful.”
