It had been a rough WSOP for Mercier who only had one minor cash prior to last night. He also lost $165,000 thanks to taking 3.3 to 1 odds against Brian Hastings winning a bracelet.
The long-time Team PokerStars Pro’s luck changed big-time last night when he managed to river a broadway straight with A-K after opponent James Obst turned a set of queens.
The Floridian scooped the massive pot and took an overwhelming chip lead right at the start of the final table.
Mercier Deflates British Rail, Defeats Simon Deadman Heads-Up
By the time Mercier entered heads-up play Simon Deadman had nearly closed the gap and the chip counts were 7.4 million to 6.3 million respectively.
Deadman briefly stole the chip lead but Mercier won a massive pot by flopping two-pair and never looked back.
The final hand offered one hell of a coin flip with Mercier shoving all-in with pocket sixes and Deadman calling with K-Q. The board bricked out and gave Mercier the pot and the bracelet.
Interestingly it was Mercier’s first bracelet in No-Limit Hold’em as both of his other bracelets came in Pot-Limit Omaha.
The win moved Mercier’s all-time live tournament haul to a staggering $14.4 million.
Meanwhile Mike Gorodinsky, who finished runner-up to Phil Hellmuth in Razz this weekend, busted in third place adding yet another final table appearance this summer.
