Bandwidth, Wi-Fi Upgrades to Boost Online Action at 2015 WSOP

This year, though, we should see it everywhere across the Rio.

This summer players will be able to ante up both live and online at WSOP.com much easier thanks to big improvements in the IT infrastructure at the Rio and changes in restrictions for players at the tables.

Free Wi-Fi will be available throughout the tournament areas with improved bandwidth to handle the increased action. All guests at the Rio will also have free Wi-Fi included in their fees.

It's a set-up "light years" ahead of past years, according to WSOP VP of Communications Seth Palansky, and with new mobile WSOP.com apps for both Android and iOS as well it should make for a big jump in the action.

Changes in Gaming Control Regulations Key

Expect to see a lot more online action.

Nevada is one of three states with fully licensed, regulated online poker available to both residents and visitors physically located in the state.

For most of the year volume is fairly low with an average of around 170 players online according to PokerScout.com.

During the World Series of Poker, with thousands of poker players flooding Las Vegas from the US and around the world, that number jumps substantially.

But while players were allowed to bring laptops to the table last year the set-up wasn't entirely conducive to a big boost in action during live play.

This year should be different with the WSOP footing the bill for increased bandwidth in tournament areas and an upgrade to the Wi-Fi infrastructure and the ability for players to use their mobile phones.

A key exemption to Nevada Gaming Control Board Regulations is also significant. According to standard Nevada regulations only one player per IP address can play in a cash game or tournament.

IP addresses at the Rio (and other Caesars’ properties in Las Vegas), however, have been “whitelisted” to allow for it. Other properties or hotels in Las Vegas will still be subject to the standard restrictions.
