Spain's poker wunderkind Mateos, who won the WSOPE main event in 2013 at just age 19, soared from 5th of 6 to begin the final table to add an EPT main event title to his CV.
Mateos also became the first-ever Spanish EPT champ after 17 previous unsuccessful final-table appearances by his countrymen.
A dream of his since he began playing poker Mateos collected €1,082,000 for the win and pushed his career live tally up past $3.5m - trailing only the legend Carlos Mortensen on Spain's all-time list.
21-year-old Carrel, meanwhile, a star online as "Epiphany77," nailed his first €1m+ score by claiming the €25k High Roller.
Lodden Stunned By Monster Bluff
When the Main Event final table began today Mateos was a partial favorite but was looking up at two legends himself in Ole Schemion and Johnny Lodden.
Schemion, however, hit the rail first after a huge hand against Muhyedine Fares - Schemion hit two pair but Fares hit the nut flush on the river - decimated his stack.
Mateos took the wind out of Lodden himself with a huge river bluff that sent Lodden into a tailspin and will be talked about for quite some time.
Lodden went out in fourth shortly after, leaving him with another EPT near-miss in his legendary career.
From there Mateos entered heads-up against Fares down 2-1 in chips but pulled ahead slowly but surely.
He put Fares away, more or less, when he flopped two pair to Fares' top pair and four hands later it was over.

Carrel Clips Derwiche; O'Dwyer Third
In another coup for the 21-and-under crowd, Brit Carrel stunned an elite field in the €25,000 High Roller for his first EPT title.
Already a Sunday Million and GUKPT winner, Carrel last year told us his story of depositing $15 and running it up to $500k but has now added an amazing epilogue.
With 215 entries in this one — most of them the best tournament players in the world - Carrel was an underdog in his first-ever €25k, but not for long.
Winning a flip against Dan Smith early in the day gave him momentum and, after cracking Steve O'Dwyer's kings with sevens to bust him in third, he rolled to heads-up with a big lead.
It took him just 30 hands before he finally polished off France's Imad Derwiche for an epic win he'll share with the plentiful friends he sold pieces to. The full final eight and payouts:
