The Global Poker League will be a 10-week competition with eight sponsored teams, with seven players each, that will be competing for prizes coming partly from the sponsors and partly from the GPI itself.

GPI is going all-in on the project and plans to invest somewhere in the range of $3 to $5 million on the league.

The Next Step in “Sportifying” Poker

Once again all the events will be streamed via Twitch.tv just like the Global Poker Masters.

In addition there are plans to have the GPL piggyback on other big live tournaments like how the Global Poker Masters worked with EPT Malta.

The GPI has also decided there will be no teams named after poker brands with the intention of diversifying sponsorship and portraying the game in a new light.

Online poker sites will still be involved with the competition, however.

The GPL will begin with a draft where team owners will be able to select their players. They will most likely be choosing from the GPI 300 or GPI 500 but there will be some qualifiers for wild card players.

The team owners will foot all the bills for the team and the individual players will not have to pay anything.

The League will launch in either September or October, according to GPI CEO Alexandre Dreyfus.
