In today’s 3-Bet we’ll looking at the rising popularity of poker in Brazil, the dollars and cents of PokerStars' big swag push at the 2006 WSOP and a new poker movie that looks sorta OK.

1) Massive BSOP Millions Shattering Records

It’s safe to say the Brazilian poker boom is underway.

Earlier this week the $460 buy-in opening event of the Brazilian Series of Poker Millions drew 2,935 players which organizers are claiming as the biggest tournament ever held outside the USA.

Yesterday the $3,000 buy-in Main Event began with Chris Moneymaker, Andre Akkari, Ariel Celestino and Ronaldo taking to the felt.

Moneymaker praised the massive tournament series on Twitter calling it one of the best tournament series he’s ever played.

“If you’re looking for a different kind of poker trip this needs to be a stop on your list,” he wrote.

“Second year here and I doubt I’ll miss it again.”

Maybe Moneymaker can win the BSOP and help kick off another poker boom. Doing it in just one country simply isn’t enough.

2) That Famous PokerStars Jersey? It Cost $60

First off, if you’re not following former PokerStars VP of Marketing Dan Goldman’s blog you probably should.

Goldman has been releasing gems about the early days of PokerStars and the rise of online poker.

Who didn't love the 'Stars jersey?

This week Goldman published a post titled “What happens when you give the marketing guys too much money (Part 3)”, which entails the challenges of the PokerStars marketing department during the frenzy that was the WSOP in 2006.

PokerStars famously gave away lavish swag bags to every player they put in the Main Event that year.

The bags included baseballs, shirts, hats and… perhaps most notably a hockey jersey.

According to Goldman PokerStars didn’t skimp on the jerseys and contracted the same company that made jerseys for the NHL. It cost PokerStars $60 wholesale and the company spent a total of $730,000 on gear that year.

Considering how prevalent PokerStars would become in the coming years it doesn’t exactly seem like wasted money.

3) Ron Perlman, Giancarlo Esposito Star in Poker Night

There are so many movies that involve poker in some way it’s getting hard to keep track of them all and for every Rounders there are three Lucky You’s.

The latest one is a bit of a different breed, however.

Poker Night, which stars Beau Mircheff and Sons of Anarchy’s Ron Perlman and Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito, is about a detective who has to use every thing he learned in a cop’s poker game to save himself from a psychopath.

Intriguing or ridiculous? We’ll let you decide.
