Jason White, who has amassed 21 top 10 finishes in NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, is taking that plunge in this year’s 2014 Main Event.
“I had an off weekend and I decided to come out,” said White while on break.
“It’s been a lot of fun. I think I’m the first NASCAR driver to play in the World Series of Poker so that’s pretty cool.”
White picked up the game while hanging around the track with his NASCAR buddies and has taken a keen interest in the game ever since.
“Obviously it’s a lot of luck and a lot of skill,” he said.
“You have to be in the right place at the right time. It’s a lot like racing that way. In Daytona if you’re aren’t in the right place at the right time then you get in a wreck. Just like racing you just want to beat everyone else in poker.”
White Gets Some Help from N9er Jay Farber
The WSOP Main Event is a far cry from the casual games White is used too on the NASCAR circuit.
“This is a little bit different game here,” he said. “Right now on Day 1 it’s more more straight up. Back home we mess around and get carried away bluffing. Going all-in with 3-6 off suit and such. It’s a lot of fun too.”
Fortunately White has some help from close friend Jay Farber, who finished second in last year’s Main Event, and he also has all his fellow drivers from NASCAR texting him advice.
While White has made a considerable amount of money racing NASCAR, the $10 million first-place prize in the Main Event is a serious score for anyone. White said he’d love to make a deep run in the massive tournament.
“It would be awesome,” he said.
“I’d definitely like to be able to show what NASCAR drivers can do at the poker table. A lot of NASCAR drivers love to play poker we just don’t get to do it too much. It would be great to make a run in the Main Event.”
