In today’s WSOP 3-Bet we’ll take a look at Joe Cada’s comeback, a different opinion on that infamous Matusow penalty and a throwback look at the poker community in the year 2000.
Cada Proves He Still has World Champion Chops

Joe Cada has quietly put together one of the most successful poker careers of any modern WSOP Main Event champion.
Last night Cada outlasted a stacked final table that included JC Tran, Erick Lindgren and Jeremy Ausmus to finally nail down his second WSOP bracelet and $670,041.
Since winning the Main Event in 2009, Cada has won nearly $2 million with four WSOP final table appearances, one of which he won and the other he finished runner-up.
It’s tough to say why Cada has flown under the radar as much as he has over the last five years (perhaps it was because he was backed and only had a percentage of his big win) but he’s going to be tough to ignore if he keeps this up.
Cada beat Ausmus heads-up with pocket queens over pocket jacks in the final hand of the tournament.
With the victory Cada moved to over $10.2 million in lifetime live tournament earnings (which is boosted considerably by that $8.5m win in 2009).
Schulman Offers Different Opinion on Matusow Penalty

Remember that whole thing where Mike Matusow got a one-round penalty for excessive celebration and it was completely uncalled for and the entire poker world rallied behind him?
As with most things it appears there was more to the story.
Allyn Shulman, who was actually at his table, has a very different tale to tell in a recent Cardplayer Column.
Shulman contends that Matusow so was repeatedly abusive to players at the table and the situation came to a head when Matusow won that big hand and, according to Schulman, stepped away from the table and dropped a series of obscenities.
That finally led to several players at the table getting fed up and calling over floor man Dave Lamb.
According to Shulman, Lamb asked what was going on and Matusow responded immediately got in his face and started swearing at him.
However you feel about the Matusow penalty it appears there are at least a few people who were fully behind the decision made by the floor.

While Daniel Negreanu, Ted Forrest and David Sklansky are now some of the most well-known poker players on the planet, it wasn’t always so.
In the early 2000s, before TwoPlusTwo and PocketFives took hold, poker players used the newsgroup rec.gambling to talk about hands and discuss poker.
What’s amazing is the number of poker players, who are now household names, that would venture on the site to share their opinions.
In a thread titled “Sklansky, Caro and Malmuth”, which was published in 2000, a rec.gambling user asked why Sklansky, Caro and Malmuth didn’t crush live games instead of writing books.
The resulting discussion included all the aforementioned players and a feisty Daniel Negreanu debating their overall place in the poker hierarchy.
It’s a blast from the past and while every player has grown up since then, It’s funny to hear Negreanu, arguably the most famous player in the game today, sound like just another poker fan.
