Andy Frankenberger, who won WPT Season 9 Player of the Year, amassed a stack of 90,200 chips by the time Day 1 drew to a close.
Frankenberger, who also won a WSOP bracelet this summer, has nearly $2 million in tournament earnings despite only being on the poker circuit for a couple years.
Right behind Frankenberger was Kathy “PokerKat” Liebert who bagged 90,000. Liebert has made five WPT final tables but has yet to take one of the tournaments down outright.
Both players are chasing Tom Schreiber who finished with 104,000, good enough for the overall chip lead.
The 2011 edition of WPT Foxwoods began with 185 players chasing a WPT title but by the time five levels had been played only 141 players were still standing.
Among the numerous players to buy-in were Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy, Will Failla, Erik Seidel, Dwyte Pilgrim, Christian Harder, Adam Geyer, David Sands, Ryan Welch, Bernard Lee and Hoyt Corkins.
Jason Mercier, who is still chasing poker’s Triple Crown, also made a late registration into the tournament.
Matt Matros, Erik Seidel, Cornel Cimpan, Jonathan Little, Steve Brecher, Lee Markholt, Tony Dunst and Jon Turner all made it to Day 2 with decent stacks.
Action resumes at 12 p.m. local time tomorrow.
