Daily 3-Bet: Northug Crushes, Dreyfus Defense, Koon Climbing

In today’s 3-Bet we’ll take a look at the GPI’s Alex Dreyfus defending his system to Phil Hellmuth, Petter Northug turning his poker game around and Jason Koon climbing up the poker stakes.

1) Petter Northug Bounces Back with $130k Win on PokerStars

Norwegian cross-country skier Petter Northug got absolutely crushed in the Olympics by not medaling and accumulating over $50k in losses on PokerStars.

Well, like any world-class athlete he knows how to mount a comeback. Earlier this week he went on a rampage on PokerStars earning $130k and making his loss a distant memory.

Northug, who plays on ‘Stars as “NorthugJr,” annihilated opponent PimpyLimpy in $50/$100 Pot-Limit Omaha.

The skier played just over 3,500 hands and despite PimpyLimpy posting an early win of $45k it was Northug who stormed back and vacuumed $170k from Pimpy.

While Northug has opted out of highstakesdb’s overall results tracking you can still see results on a 48-hour basis so it will be interesting to see if the Norwegian piles on more hands after bouncing out of the Olympics.

If nothing else, Northug is certainly doing better than fellow Scandi Viktor “Isildur1” Blom over the last few days. Isildur1 lost $341k, most of it to upstart Austrian Schoitl.

2) Dreyfus Defends GPI: “We Cap $100k Tournaments”

Settle down.

 

So earlier this week Phil Hellmuth fired a shot at the GPI and called it “very flawed” because of the way it weights $100k super high rollers.

There were numerous members of the community who defended the system but now GPI’s head honcho Alex Dreyfus has responded in a blog on the GPI’s website.

First and foremost Dreyfus cleared up a bit of confusion as to how much the $100k tournaments factor into the index:

What disappoints me is that people are ranting or moaning on twitter without first knowing the exact facts on the way in which GPI works, especially in regards to the cap we place on the buy-in factor. What does this mean? It means that as of 1st January 2014, HR and SHR are counted as $20k . 

Dreyfus went on to say that the system isn’t perfect but they are constantly doing everything they can to improve it.

For what it’s worth, Daniel Negreanu is also still a big fan of the GPI:

3) Jason Koon = Poker Shark, Mountain Climber
