All this week the GPI has been counting down the nine most successful players in the "modern era" of poker - considered to have begun when Chris Moneymaker won the World Series of Poker Main Event in 2003.
Negreanu just beat out eight-time WSOP bracelet winner Erik Seidel who finished second, and "best player in the game" Phil Ivey, who finished ninth.
$20m in Cashes, WSOP POY Twice
It’s hard to argue with Negreanu’s success over the last 10 years.
The majority of Negreanu’s nearly $20 million in live tournament earnings have come over the past decade including five of his six WSOP bracelet wins.
Negreanu is also the only player to win WSOP Player of the Year twice as well as WPT Player of the Year in 2004.
Some of the other players in the top nine include Phil Ivey, John Juanda, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier and Michael Mizrachi.
Perhaps the most surprising player in the top nine was Alabama’s Shannon Shorr. Shorr is hardly a "big name" player like the rest of the list but busted on to the poker scene with a massive 2006 and has been a consistent earner ever since.
The entire list was calculated using GPI’s patented ranking system excluding the weighted aging factor based on the past three years. Here’s the complete top 10:
