Today in the 3-Bet we’ll take a look at another poker player taking a crack at survivor, a new chess world champion who digs poker and one of the funniest clips in poker history.
1) Poker Pro Rumored to Star in Survivor
It appears Garrett Adelstein will become the latest poker pro to try and bluff their way through long-running CBS Reality Show Survivor.
The Arizona-native has been getting all sorts of buzz on reality TV message boards as a possible contestant on Season 28 of Survivor next year.
It’s a surprising pick in some ways, as Adelstein is hardly a household name in the poker world.
Adelstein has three cashes according to Hendon Mob, his biggest was for $48.8k when he finished 222nd in the 2010 WSOP Main Event.
According to the rumors Adelstein will compete with eclectic assortment of players including a bartender, a beauty queen, a professor and a former NBA player.
None of this has been officially confirmed by CBS.
Popular Tweeter and poker player Jean-Robert Bellande took part in Survivor: China back in 2007. He ended up finishing eighth, falling well short of the $1 million first-place prize.
2) Chess/Poker Player Magnus Carlsen Becomes New World Champion
There’s a new world champion in chess and he just so happens to be a poker player as well.
Norwegian chess prodigy Magnus Carlsen dethroned longstanding champ Viswanathan Anand earlier today to become the 16th undisputed world chess champion and win $1.5 million in prize money.
Carlsen’s rise in the chess world has been phenomenal, after becoming a grandmaster at the age of 13, the Norwegian hit a peak rating of 2872, which is the highest in history. He was also mentored by the great Gary Kasparov.
He’s also a budding poker player as evidenced by an interview with Chessbase back in 2010. When asked if wins at poker:
“If I take the game seriously, I do. If not, I sometimes lose. But it doesn’t matter. What is important is that I have a life beyond chess.”
It’s not exactly unusual for chess players to be into poker as Jeff Sarwer, Almira Skripchenko and Dan Harrington all transitioned from chess to poker.
Of course none of them were quite at the same level that Carlsen just reached. Given his new status Carlsen would get some serious attention if he showed up at a live poker tournament.
3) Billly Gazes' Football Gaff Still Hilarious
Thanks to Kevmath for reminding us about this one.
In 2007, Erick Lindgren, Josh Arieh, Daniel Negreanu and Billy Gazes filmed a series of prop bets for ESPN’s The Nuts segment.
That, by itself, is not very noteworthy.
One of the challenges, however, was attempting to kick a field goal and Gazes unintentionally produced one of the greatest poker-related YouTube clips of all time.
If you haven’t seen it, let’s just say Gazes isn’t making the NFL any time soon. The giggles start at about 0:41 in.
