Nguyen’s election, which was announced yesterday, was not without controversy as the former World Champion took considerable criticism when he became inebriated during the 2008 WSOP Player’s Championship event and berated heads-up opponent Michael Demichele.
“To keep Scotty Nguyen out of the Hall of Fame would be absurd,” said Negreanu at the 2013 WSOPE. “He had one day where he got drunk and acted like an idiot and apologized for it.”
Negreanu went on to say that Nguyen has simply contributed too much to the poker world to be excluded from the Poker Hall of Fame for one incident.
“I think if you look at Scotty Nguyen’s record over his career he has been – without a doubt – the most fan-friendly, best ambassador you could ask for,” said Negreanu.
During the ESPN broadcast of the 2008 Player’s Championship, Nguyen constantly needled opponents Erick Lindgren and Michael Demichele while swilling beers.
At one point Nguyen started yelling for cocktail service at the final table.
“They didn’t show everything,” said Negreanu. “Demichele was poking at him a little bit and Scotty lost it, clear and simple.
“We’ve seen people lose it before. Hellmuth has lost it. I’ve lost it and I’m sure I’ll lose it again. But overall I think Scotty totally gets it in terms of what poker is about and creating entertainment value.”
