After years of successful online grinding Mercier exploded onto the poker scene in 2008, going on one of the biggest heaters in the history of the game.
Between then and 2011 Mercier racked up over $7.5 million and won EPT and NAPT main events, two WSOP bracelets and four major high roller events.
But despite over half a million dollars in earnings in 2012, Mercier wasn't able to show a profit on the year.
“Last year was rough but I tried to handle things as best I could,” Mercier told PokerListings.com in his trailer at the 2013 World Series of Poker.
“It was definitely rough going through a breakup after we got engaged but I feel like now I'm making the decisions that will be setting myself up for the vision I see for my life.”
The Best Thing to Do is Play Poker
Mercier said he's focusing on eating well and exercising as well as dressing and acting professionally at the poker table. So far this year it seems to be working.
Since January Mercier has cashed five times and each one has been bigger than the last. Most recently he finished second in the €100,000 Super High Roller at the EPT Grand Final for $1.46 million.
“I'm just trying to do all the things I can to help me maintain my focus and play well,” explained Mercier.
“Right now I feel like the best thing for me to do is play poker and try to work on my professional life and work on my personal life when I'm at home with my family.”
Mercier Books Big Bracelet Bets at WSOP 2013
Heading into this World Series of Poker Jason Mercier announced he'd be taking action on winning a bracelet sometime this summer.
He was giving three-to-one odds and, according to Mercier, he had some takers.
“I've got a decent amount of action on a bracelet this year, mostly against Antonio Esfandiari and Brian Rast,” said Mercier.
“If I won a smaller event I'd definitely be making a lot more from the bracelet bets than from the prize money.”
Mercier said there are a lot of reasons for making these bracelet bets, but the bottom line is he thinks he has an edge.
Considering he's won two bracelets over the last five years, we have to agree.
