Coming into the final table as the chip leader, O'Dwyer needed a fortuitous eight to finally finish things off heads-up against Andrew Pantling.
O'Dwyer hit trips on the flop with 10-8o, Pantling turned a flush to take the lead and look primed to take a 2-1 chip advantage before the case eight fell on the river to end it.
Offering to look at the numbers heads-up for a deal, which Pantling declined, O'Dwyer ended up taking home the full €1,224,000 first-place prize.
Pantling, the Matchbook exec who impressed many over the week and at the toughest-ever EPT final table with his aggression, settled for €842,000.
Negreanu Comes Up Shy; Mercier Goes Down Early
With no soft spots at the table, things were heated from the very first hand. Aussie Grant Levy, the short stack coming in, was the first to go at the hands of Pantling.
Mercier - along with Jake Cody one of two players looking to become the first-ever two-time EPT champ - was next to go in 7th when his QT shove in the small blind over a Johnny Lodden cut-off raise ran into Pantling's AQ in the big blind.
Cody and Noah Schwartz were next to go in sixth and fifth. respectively, when they both ran into Daniel Negreanu's aces in a 3-way all-in.
Negreanu's impressive run over the last few months looked ready to continue four-handed until a couple of hands against Lodden went south, including losing with queens against nines when a nine hit the turn.
Losing a big flip with fours shortly after, Negreanu was out in fourth and had to settle for €321,000.
All three remaining players held the chip lead briefly three-handed before Lodden lost a big pot, calling a five-bet shove against O'Dwyer's sixes with QT.
The chip leader for much of the final few days, Lodden took home €467,000 as a consolation prize. The official final eight and payouts:
1. Steve O'Dwyer €1,224,000 2. Andrew Pantling €842,000 3. Johnny Lodden €467,000 4. Daniel Negreanu €321,000 5. Jake Cody €251,000 6. Noah Schwartz €189,000 7. Jason Mercier €137,000 8. Grant Levy €103,000For a full recap of all the final-table action, check the PokerStars blog.
