Any suggestions for a future 3-Bet can be left in the comments.
Today on the 3-Bet we bring you bogus news of the next durrrr Challenge, a poker dealer who’s taking a shot at becoming president of the United States plus a very positive mainstream media article about two-time WSOP bracelet winner Carter Phillips.
1) durrrr Challenge Scam Super-Fail
It seems like whenever you put the words “durrrr” and “challenge” together they end up spelling disappointment.
But despite the disillusionment caused by Dwan’s uncompleted challenges with Patrik Antonius and Daniel Cates, we can’t help but get our hopes up when we hear news of a new heads-up grudge match.
This morning a thread kicked off on 2+2 in which a forum poster named ecotra90 claimed to be a high-stakes cash pro from Macau and announced he had organized a million-dollar battle with Tom Dwan.
But it didn’t take long to realize something was fishy.
ecotra90 posted screenshots showing a tweet from durrrr, agreeing to the challenge and a direct message from durrrr on 2+2.
The only problem? A quick trip to durrrr’s actual Twitter page showed no sign of the tweet, and some sleuthing by 2+2 moderator Boba Fett revealed that ecotra90’s 2+2 account had been created three days after the supposed DM was sent.
Both the tweet and the DM were doctored and it looks like ecotra90’s plan was to sell his equity in the nonexistent match and disappear before Dwan was able to expose the fraud.
The more likely explanation is that it was a simple prank and no money was actually going to change hands.
2) Poker Dealer a Write-In for US President
Don’t get us wrong; we like poker dealers. But that doesn’t mean we think they’re qualified to run the United States of America.
David Goossen, a poker dealer from Florida, has other ideas.
Goossen launched a write-in campaign for president from Rhode Island, and he’s hoping to cash in on disenfranchised voters in order to get himself a spot on the ballot.
“I’m making a statement that I can go into the political arena … and I can still make enough contact with the voter that they acknowledge that my platform is strong enough that they’re willing to write me in,” Goossen told the Warwick Beacon.
And just like our latest edition of Pop Poker, looking at poker and the presidential debates, Goossen understands that poker and politics have their parallels.
“You can use a good poker analogy in politics,” he said. “They’re all at the game, they’re all going against each other, but when they’re away from the game, they’re all friends.”
Goossen has dealt poker in places like Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Surprisingly his political platform has nothing to do with online poker regulation, focusing on tax reform and honest governance.
3) Carter Phillips Receives Attaboy from Charlotte Observer
We first took notice of North Carolinian Carter Phillips a few years ago in Barcelona when he made a massive river-call for his tournament life with king-high.
That was on Day 1 of the EPT Barcelona main event. Phillips went on to win the tournament for over $1.2 million.
Two WSOP bracelets and over $2.6 million in winnings later Phillips has gotten a big nod from the Charlotte Observer in a piece published today.
Phillips talks about treating his poker career like a business and how
“One of the reasons I’ve been able to be successful at it is I sit down and evaluate it as a business,” he said. “I try to do everything properly to try to maximize my profits.”
Originally planning to play professional baseball, Phillips has been unusually successful playing cards. Both of his WSOP bracelets came in big-field, low buy-in events, statistically among the most difficult to win.
Not mentioned in the article are the plans to return to school that Phillips shared with us the day after he won his second bracelet.
Phillips has said he wants to be remembered as one of the greatest tournament players in history. An ambitious dream to be sure but judging by the record he’s put together over the last few years it’s not out of reach.
